In November 2022, Colby Phillips Advisory joined with Barossa Australia at its recent Barossa Sustainability Forum to announce its ambition to pursue an exciting Nett Zero emission initiative for local wine producers.  Barossa Australia (www.barossa.com/) is the peak body representing Barossa region winemakers and grape growers.

The proposed Zero Carbon Glass Wine Bottle initiative will design commercial solutions for wine producers, glass bottle manufactures and ‘Green Gas’ producers to partner so wine bottles can be ‘certified’ Nett Zero Carbon.  The initiative was announced on the back of analysis by Colby Phillips Advisory that showed that glass wine bottles could be 60 to 70% of the Region’s wine industry supply chain emissions.  It was considered critical for future success of the Region and wine producers that these emissions were abated.  Especially following announcement by the European Union of a ‘Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism – that could become a future ‘carbon tax’ on Australian wine exports.

Colby Phillips Advisory is now working with Barossa Australia and local wine producers to launch the project, including building a coalition of wine producers, glass bottle manufacturers and other energy and packaging supply chain stakeholders.
